While the storm has made its mark on the OBX we are a resilient community. Our infrastructure is sound and repairs are well underway. Access to the ocean and the main populated portion of the barrier Island is intact.  Accommodations improve daily as we recover from Irene.  The late summer and fall is a beautiful time of year and offers some of the most pleasant weather and exciting fishing on the east coast.  As the Oregon Inlet fleet relocates and settles in Arch, Lee and the Pelican, now based at Pirates Cove, ventured out today.  After a long run to find the right water they raised 5 White Marlin and released 3.  Take that Irene!

We have a few days open at the end of September, October and most of November for the fall Tuna run and whatever else may be biting.  You may contact us directly at arch@fishthepelican.com or book us online via our website under the Availability tab.

Thanks to everyone who has called to check on us.  We are all fine and for the immediate and foreseeable future the Pelican will be fishing out of Pirates Cove Marina (web cam link) which is located here on Virginia Dare Trail west of Whalebone Junction Information Center on Rt. 64. Unfortunately Oregon Inlet Fishing Center finger piers and docks suffered considerable sound side flood damage and will have limited access for awhile.  As you can imagine land line/internet communications are hit and miss, so if you have any immediate questions please call Arch on his cell phone at 252- 216-7071.  Otherwise email us at Arch@fishthepelican.com The Pelican will be fishing starting Tuesday.

We consider ourselves lucky as the worst of it for us was the landing platform on our dock floating off.  Arch found it a few blocks away and dragged it back with the truck, made easier by the coating of sand left from the high water.  Our garden is toast.

We are fishing as usual in spite of Irene so don’t let her get you down.  The Pelican has days open in September and October!

Irene was tough on the outer banks. There is some sound side flooding damage. Arch, Summer, Bailee and the Pelican are OK.  They have some cleaning up to do and will update you on their status as soon as possible.

Thank goodness Irene weakened at landfall.  Even so the wind and rain is intense. Hopefully sound side flooding won’t be so bad.  On Monday Charlie Britt and Alan Huband caught and released 10 White Marlin on board the Pelican. They took some great photos you may view in this slideshow link.

We’ve been preparing ourselves the last few days for Hurricane Irene.  Arch has lived here longer, but since I moved here 16 years ago, the Outer Banks, with the exception of Hatteras Island and hurricane Isabelle, have been pretty lucky.  I have not seen this area in a situation that we haven’t been able to overcome easily with all things considered.

As hurricane season approaches, you will find yourself at a restaurant, local store, or with friends and will always hear, “If a hurricane comes up our sound, we are in a very bad situation”.  The anticipation of watching storms year after year, and feeling more secure when they past east of us has been diluted as I read the reports on Irene.

The spirit of this community is stronger than any, and we will grab ourselves by the boot straps and pull it together.  I will keep you all posted on what I see and hear from those that are staying.  Cross your fingers for us!

Good Luck and God Bless

It was a rough day but that didn’t stop us from finding the White Marlin.  Alan Huband and his crew released TEN White Marlin!  What a day!!!!  The weather today and tomorrow is perfect and I’m looking forward to hearing another great report from Capt. Arch.  Great job guys toughing out a little roughness and still performing like great anglers Marlin fishing, you did great!!!

Awesome day yesterday with Seven White Marlin releases!!  The Whites are hanging around for the party and we’ve been invited to play!  The Pelican has released 10 Whites and seen 4 Blue Marlin in the last two days!  We’re keeping our eye on Irene but until then the weather looks good.  Will keep you posted! Don’t forget the Fall Tuna bite is approaching fast, check our October and November availability and stock up on Tuna!

Summer Drum 2011 (2)

On the final day of the Pirates Cove Tournament  the Pelican ranked in the top 10 with 4 whites and a sail. A good day of fishing none the less. Thanks to John, Brian, Nick and Lee for the effort and let’s hope for better luck next year.

Meanwhile Summer did well on the red fish in the Third Annual Carolina Blue Funament on the Neuse River near Oriental, NC. She caught and released a 49.5 inch Drum among many boated in that event. There are dates available in late September on the Pelican. Drop us an email at arch@fishthepelican.com  or book us online.

Sam Postlethwait August 3 2011

With no storminess in the short term forecast the home stretch looks good weatherwise. Of the 61 boats registered 48 fished in the Pirates Cove Tournament today. The Pelican managed a Blue Marlin and 3 out of 4 White’s. They need a really BIG day tomorrow.

From the really cool photo department check out this one in full screen mode.  Three things about Sam Postlethwait’s  White Marlin caught on August 3rd The tag, ( you can see in the photo) and it is almost Bill-less.! It was tagged off the coast of Louisiana 89 days prior. About 1389 miles or so in three months’ time. Maybe the bill on a bill fish is overrated!  Nice work Sam and Neil!

A nice day for the Pelican’s to make it on the scoreboard. Light winds with  a northerly component and seas +/-2 feet made for a pleasant day to  fish on day 2 of the 28th year of the Pirates Cove event. With Jeff and the Obsession off to a grand start the Pelican, Captain Bracher and crew have made their mark on first day of tourney fishing.  4 out of 5 White Marlin and 1 out of 2 on sails which was par for the top boats.  A big Blue Marlin came in and looked but it was not to be.  Let’s hope for more of the same Thursday!

Meanwhile Summer Bracher and her IWFA Tournament team mates Kate Burke and Linda Harper are fishing The Third Annual Carolina Blue Funament on the Neuse River near Oriental, NC.  The ladies have caught and released at least one large Red and are most certainly having a blast.
