Paul Gerlach drove down from DC for a couple of days of blue water action onboard the Pelican. Unfortunately the Marlin bite has slackened off a bit. The Pelican did manage to limit out on Tuna yesterday. Easy when there is one angler on the boat. The 1 White Marlin they did see was not to be. Today was not much different. However the finale proved to be somewhat exciting. A lonely Wahoo decided that the spread behind the Pelican was too much to resist. After biting off the flat lines, a rigger and a favorite Hawaiian Eye, the toothy critter was finally caught. It weighed in at 65 pounds after the lure was extracted. At least Paul will be driving back with a cooler full of table fare and Arch got his lure back…
Tom and brother Ed Wilson, along with their better halves, enjoyed an unusual day on the Pelican. While the fishing part is part of the program, what and how they caught was not. Always at the ready Arch likes to keep a loaded spinning rod on the bridge. After some commotion on a flat line and screaming from the cockpit, Arch woke up and pitched his bait to what turned out to be a 150 pound Blue Marlin. An hour long tug of war later the marlin gave in and was released accordingly. A tailing White Marlin was teased up and hooked via traditional methods and then added to count. Then to top it off an 81 pound Wahoo and 5 nice Yellowfin filled the box.
While we can’t promise this type of action everyday you’ve got a better chance on board the Pelican than in front of your PC or mobile device. Ed or Tom please send photos!
John Gordon and friends enjoyed a choppy day on the Pelican. They ran east of the inlet a good ways and found 1 out of two Sailfish eager to please. The 10 Tuna they put in the box was equally satisfying.
We have a party of two that are interested in booking July 30 and looking for a few more to split the cost of the trip. If interested please call 252-441-3197 or email arch@fishthepelican.com. Great way to share the cost of a trip on the Pelican!
Yesterday, John Bailey, his son Robbie, and nephew Eric caught one out of two Sailfish to finish the tournament with a total of two White Marlin and a Sailfish release. Today, our make up party caught a 400 lb Blue Marlin, three of four Sailfish and a Yellowfin Tuna. Not bad for dodging storms.
Lay day was yesterday for all boats. High wind made for a rough start this morning but not without a few Marlin released in this tournament. Pelican released a White Marlin today and gearing up for tomorrow. Best of luck to all!
Gary Woods and his family had a good day on the Pelican. They ran awhile but it was literally “worth it in the long run”. Arch and Lee managed to find and help them present baits that 2 White Marlin and 1 Sailfish fed on. That included the hooks as they were promptly released. However the gaffer dolphin did get the best of them along with a perfectly good ballyhoo. Others in the fleet who ventured out to this general area, also picked at a few Whites and at least one Blue Marlin.
Jim and his buddy’s had a good day on the 14th. Here are a few of the photos!
Capt Arch,
I wanted to say thanks to you and Lee for making Claire feel welcome this past Friday. She can be a little standoffish at times, and I was a bit concerned that she’d be reluctant to participate, but you all made her feel welcome, and she had a ball. In fact, on Friday night I asked her when she thought she’d like to go offshore again, and she eagerly said “tomorrow.” She’s hooked, and we all had a great time. You run a professional boat.
Thanks again,
Jonathan Lundy
The billfish bite continues. The 30 plus mile run was worth it as the Pelican and crew raised 6 Sails, 4 Whites and a Blue one. They ended up catching then releasing 4 of the Sails and 2 of the Whites. Pretty good fishing.
