Between the wind and family matters we have been laying low. Seems like this NE gale won’t quit. Maybe by the end of the week. Tuna bite has been good when you can get to them.
Running off shore for a good bite can easily be taken for granted when you live and breath it. Fact is it can be a trip of a lifetime for many. Keith Hoffman thinks so as he shared the following note and some photos from a few years back. You may recognize a couple of the characters. We will definitely try and get Keith hooked up next year.
Hello Captain, I am reaching out to you as I have not spoken with you in probably 15 years (1996). I have attached a few pictures of some trips I made with my father and some friends of his in the past. Imagine my surprise when I determined that I would be taking my first vacation to Nags Head next Summer June 10 – 17th 2012 and found your boat still comes out of that port. When I first went on the trips with my father my son was just born, the two trips I took with my father where the best memories I have of him – he passed away suddenly last year. And I was hoping to have a trip like that for my son (now 17) and I but wouldn’t have anyone else to go on the trip with us. From the looks of your boat right now you are all booked up except for 6/11/2012. I don’t want to take too much of your time but do you ever have trips where others join in, I know you can fill out an application when I get there but I have a feeling you will be booked.
My father worked for Sun Microsystems back then we came down with a group of 40 guys, I don’t know if my father ever went on any other trips with you after the two we did two years in a row. If you don’t think your boat will be available I understand it is a busy time of year or if you think the only option is for me to book a whole day just let me know, it is tough thinking of spending 2K for my son and I for a day of fishing but we will see.
In the primary picture I am in the baseball hat and white shirt, my father Jim Hoffman is right next to you, Captain Bob was next to my father and he has also since passed. I for the life of me cannot remember the other member of our team but I think I actually saw a video of him fishing out of Oregon Inlet in 2009 on YouTube. In the second picture that is me holding up that bull dolphin – what a rush I still have the certificate.
Thanks for any information you can pass along, though I am not sure we will be sailing with you but I will have my son there one or two days when you return to port that is for sure.

Keith that is one heck of a Bull Dolphin!

The 2012 Pelican availability calendar is up and running. Some good dates are still available. Book them now as they won’t last long.
Gaffers
Really big Dolphin and enough Tuna to keep it interesting. The Pelican, as well as most of the off shore fleet out of North Carolina enjoyed relatively calm seas. At least when compared to the morning forecast. Among the bounty of table fare a Blue Marlin was caught and released.
Perfect Conditions
Light winds and calm seas made for a great off shore adventure for Elizabeth, Bev, Jeff and Matt. They hail from Richmond, VA and will return home with stories, Tuna and Mia Mia to feast on. Meanwhile and closer to shore the Cobia have moved in!
Back at It!
The Pelican and crew are back at it after a winter of R&R. Sail fishing in Mexico was great and a month in Destin Florida chasing anything that would bite on light tackle was even better. Helps to walk the pier and recharge the battery. Especially when they are biting.
Oregon Inlet is good to go and today’s offshore catch from our port of call included Dolphin and Tuna. Among the fleet 3 billfish were caught. The action will only improve as the season gets cranking. Check our calendar out and see if you can fit it in a day in blue water.
We would like to post some old Pelican photos we may not have. Please send any good action shots you may have to arch@fishthepelican.com and we will see about getting them posted up! Please be sure to include any details and names.
Thanks
Great Start To 2012 Season!
While Blue Fin Tuna fishing has been great all winter within the Oregon Inlet fishing fleet, The Yellowfins showed up in great numbers this week! It’s hard to believe we are approaching our fishing season already, but definitely welcomed. We are gearing up to begin fishing April 27th and truly looking forward to another productive year. We’ll set this spring off with catches of Yellowfin Tuna and Dolphin while dipping into Cobia fishing. This is a great time to take advantage of meat fishing and stocking up the freezer! Check our availability and enjoy a day on the Pelican!
Spring time!
It’s the time of year when not much is biting and everyone starts thinking about it when they will.
Arch fished Mexico this past January and February with good results. Out of 30 or so days fished he averaged 20 fish a day. Probably twice that many taking a look at the baits in some way shape or form. Most of the sail bite was in trolling mode in spite of the grass and a few days spent under the birds. The Dolphin fish bite was extraordinary and made for great table fare at the Ballyhoo Bar and Grill. Add a few Snapper or Grouper and you never went hungry. Arch is going back to Mexico next winter so give him a call or email Arch@fishthepelican.com and figure out dates that work for you.
The Pelican will be fishing the last week in April 2012. Check out availability here!
Mexico Sailfishing Update!
If this is something you have considered doing in the past, get off the pot and do it. It is some of the greatest Sailfishing you will find, not to mention leaving the cold behind and soaking up the sun and enjoying authentic Mexican culture. It is an experience that is a must if you are interested in releasing on average double digit Sailfish daily and enjoying the plethora of bragging rights when you return to the states.
Arch has had a great season so far, with only a day or two of unfavorable weather conditions. The releases have ranged from 3o’s to the lowest of 16, super numbers coming from the Kin M and Capt. Arch at the helm.
The Pelican begins fishing May 1, 2012. This is the time to get your charter dates in as we are experiencing a increase in bookings for the 2012 season. If you are interested in Mahi and Tuna, take advantage of May and June, July is also great for meat fishing and we will begin to see our Marlin going into August and September. October and November are super for Yellowfin Tuna. Don’t wait for the last minute as weekends in the May and June months get booked first, so take a look at our availability and get your dates in. We look forward to seeing you at the dock, and having another great fishing season for 2012!

Pelican 2011 Review
This year has been like most any other. Consistently different. The Pelican crew caught and released over 250 billfish. While White Marlin and Sailfish numbers were better than average, they were a bit off compared to 2010. The Blue Marlin count was up. We had 17 to the leader this past season. 7 of those where estimated to be over 400 pounds. The Dolphin and Tuna fishing was average to slightly above normal with a good showing of Big Eye Tuna in May and June. A few Cobia showed up just before Memorial Day and made for an interesting stop on the way in from blue water. As of this date a few Tuna are still around and the Stripers should be gathering soon.
Oregon Inlet has recovered nicely from Irene’s sound side flooding. We are tied up for the season and will be trying our luck in Florida and Mexico. Reports may be more intermittent from now until May as we “take a break”! A big THANK YOU to everyone who chose to fish with us this year and we look forward to seeing you again. The calendar for 2012 can be accessed here or you can give Arch a call.
Two Days of Limiting Out!
The last two days have been very exciting while we indulged in the Yellowfin Tuna Bite! This weekend was filled with awesome weather, fishing and most of all great anglers. We had a great time! We’re looking forward to finishing this month with more days of loading the box and limiting out. Take advantage of this tuna fishing, what’s Thanksgiving without going fishing? Check out our availability and give the Turkey a little company with fresh Yellowfin Tuna!
Sailfish in January?
Think warm!
Captain Bracher still has a few days open for sail fishing in Mexico! The port of call is Isle Mujeres and the dates are as follows. January 14th , 23rd& 24th and the 28th2012. For those of you interested in more information please call Arch directly at 252-441-3197. You may also email him at arch@fishthepelican.com . For those who are not familiar Isla Mujeres it is an island off the vacation resort city of Cancun in Mexico. (you can see the dock in the preceding link!) Access is easy and frequent from most major US airport hubs. Lodging is abundant, reasonably priced and very close to the dock. Tourism rules as the main economic stimulus and for this reason the area is unlike most other parts of Mexico. The fishing is usually phenomenal with January being the most productive month. A warm and welcomed break from the cold and somewhat fish-less days of January.
Stateside it has been blowing for several days on the OBX. When accessible the Tuna holes have been productive.
