We need a cold front!

Alan Huvan and his buddies from the Richmond area gathered dockside this morning bright and early.  The Pelican left close to first light with a boat full of anxious anglers.  Before Arch put them on any fish he made sure to find the “only rain shower on the East Coast” to cool them down.  After that is was a bit slower than usual as the Pelican went 2/3 on the White Marlin.  Maybe Issac will help the cold front finally push through.

Bailey’s Second Blue One

They are hard to catch if you are sitting on the couch or in front of the computer screen. John, Arch and Lee set off in search of and reaped a nice reward for doing so. 3 out of 4 Whites in relatively shallow water. Then to top it off they ventured further out into the deep and released a 700lb + Blue one after an hour of fight. The largest Blue Marlin the Pelican has released in a couple of years. Lost another on the secret lure. Perseverance! Way to go John.

Bailey’s Blue One

A Pelican regular, John Bailey hails from the DC Metro area. Luck has followed him as of late and today was no exception. Arch, Lee and John started out shallow (47 fathoms) and raised, caught and released 2 White’s.  Arch got bored on the flats and went deep (1000 fathoms) John got his Blue one and 3 nice Tuna somewhere in between. Missed two other White’s.  Nothing red hot, but it is consistent bill fishing.

White Marlin’s and the Weather

The Marlin bite has been like the weather front.  It keeps hanging around. The Pelican has managed to raise 3-5 a day for the last three. 3 for 5 today. First mate Lee Albarty’s 10 year old son Sonny showed dad a thing or two.  He caught his first Sailfish yesterday. Then too top it off he put a whipping on a grade A Yellow Fin Tuna on a 80.  When his grandfather asked him if he needed help his reply was short and to the point.  “NO!”  Watch out Lee! He may be hooked.

Day 2 on the Fly

Not as good on the hooking up end today.  6 White Marlin and 3 Sailfish teased up.  One really good sail bite then pulled off. Same average seen per boat with the rest of the fleet billfishing conventional methods. A couple of more caught.

White’s on a Fly *^!$#

It’s that good.  In spite of a weather front which seems to have hung up for a few weeks the White Marlin fishing is first class.  To make it even more challenging today’s angler decided to catch them on a fly rod. The crew managed to raise 7 White’s and a Sail. 6 of the former teased up to the boat nicely and 4 of those were caught and released.  The Sail choked on the fly and got away. Arch is particularly fond of this type of fishing as it saves on bait. Stay tuned to see how they do on day two!

2012 White Marlin Bite is on!

They showed up in a nice way. More so this morning with 4 or 5 caught by noon.  Tim Davis and his buddies from Charlotte, NC ended up with 7 Whites and 1 Sail. At least one was hungry enough to try and eat a teaser that was dangling from a rigger while yet another had its way with 1 of the baits before they even got the spread back out. A hectic morning may be an understatement. The afternoon was a bit slower.

This coming Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are still open and are lining up to be prime days if the weather holds! Looking like it will.  Email Arch@fishthepelican.com or call 252-441-3197. He really wants to go.

We Tried

On the final day of the Pirates Cove the Pelican and crew made a gallant effort.  While near the top for the day the 6 White Marlin and 1 Sailfish caught and released was not quite enough. The A team of anglers Brian, John and Doug, along with mates Lee and Pat also missed 3 other Whites and watched a Blue one that would not eat.  I’m sure they’ll try again next year.

Two Prime Days Available

The Pirates Cove Big Game Tournament is coming to an end today is the last day.  We are hoping for a comeback today but none the less excited for the teams that are in the top three!  Congratulations to all boats who have participated in this event!  We had a cancellation for August 22 & 23 next week!!  These are prime days, the Marlin fishing has been awesome and will only get better.  If you are interested please call Arch’s cell 252-216-7071.  PRIME DAYS!!!  This doesn’t happen everyday, so if you want them give us a call, we’d love to hear from you!!

Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament

We releasedtwo out of five yesterday for the beginning of the Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament.  Some boats released up to five, which is a great way to kick this tournament off.  We took our lay day today and looking forward to the next few days of good fishing.
